For more than 35 years, SFBBO scientists and citizen scientists have conducted research on Bay Area waterbirds. We search South Bay sloughs to prevent the spread of avian diseases; conduct surveys to understand how waterbird use the former and current salt ponds that ring the Bay; monitor more than 70 colonial waterbird colonies that nest throughout the Bay Area; and participate in a region-wide annual shorebird survey. In addition, we study the impact of the exponential growth of nesting California Gull populations on local species and work with resource managers to help curb over population of gulls and corvids in the region; and conduct research and management strategies to help restore Bay Area Western Snowy Plover populations, a species federally listed as threatened and in need of our help.
