Habitat Restoration Projects
A major part of protecting bird species from threats involves ensuring that birds have enough quality habitat. So in addition to collecting and sharing data about birds, we are actively involved in several habitat restoration projects. These projects not only help the birds we are trying to conserve, but also create healthy environments where other species, as well as humans, can thrive.
Please visit our Reports and Resources section to learn about the issues birds face, download our research findings, and find other habitat science information. You can also contact outreach@sfbbo.org to request our data or learn how your agency or organization can partner on our research. Please follow the links below to learn more about each of our research projects, and follow the habitat restoration button below that to volunteer.
Tidal Marsh Habitat
During the past 150 years the Bay Area lost 90% of our tidal mashes. Our ecologists and volunteers design and apply strategies to restore marshes around the Bay. |
Snowy Plover Habitat
Plovers are a threatened species that live on the dry salt pond beds around our Bay. Our scientists and volunteers enhance habitat to deter predators and hide nesting birds. |
Burrowing Owl Habitat
Once plentiful throughout our grassland habitats, these birds are now almost extinct from the region. We work with others to enhance habitat for the owls and their prey. |
