 1 ~ Volunteer Night at the Rengstorff: Wednesday, March 29th, 7 - 9 pm

Celebrate another year of volunteering and birding with SFBBO at the Rengstorff House in Mountain View.  There will be wine (courtesy of Barefoot Cellars), snacks, and desserts!  What can be better than a little bit o' wine and a little bit o' bird talk?   Don't let the Victorian surroundings, wine, and cheese throw you off though; SFBBO's all about the birder casual attire. Thank you, Barefoot!
Please RSVP by March 22th and e-mail photos you'd like to share at the event by March 27th to jchow@sfbbo.org.  For directions and more information, check out SFBBO's online calendar of events: http://www.sfbbo.org/calendar.htm

2 ~ Hi Ho Hi Ho, it's off to work we go... SFBBO's award-winning volunteer program includes a number of training sessions this month.  If you're looking to become a volunteer, stay tuned for the next volunteer orientation.

Monday, March 13th, Colonial Waterbird Orientation, 6:30 - 8 pm: This workshop will include an overview of the projects, data sheet instruction, and question-and-answer session.  Snacks will be provided!  A few "veterans" may be able to join us to share their stories and sage wisdom.  Location: SFBBO office, Alviso; RSVP to Cheryl Strong at cstrong@sfbbo.org

Great Blue Heron Day at Vasona Park is coming up and we'll need volunteers to help set up and monitor scopes for 1-2 hour shifts.  Chat with passersby about Great Blue Heron colonies and birding in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Chatting about the joys of being an SFBBO member would be nice, too!

Sign up to be a volunteer by e-mailing jchow@sfbbo.org and we'll send you more details and available shifts before the last week of March.

4~ Coyote Creek Field Station Update: February 2006
Although we have heard Golden-crowned Kinglets this winter, they have eluded our nets since February 2004 until an adult male flew into our nets on the 25th.  They usually flit about high above our nets.  Interestingly, we captured them more often than in recent years.  The Yellow-rumped Warblers are still active at CCFS with the same capture rate as January (11 birds/100 net hours).  Big Sur Ornithology Lab (BSOL) has noted very low capture rates for the Yellow-rumps for this winter.  Did they not migrate as far south this year?  Or are they leaving much earlier due to the warmer winter?  More...
