California Fall Challenge!
The Bird Observatory's 11th annual birdathon fundraiser is coming soon. Between September 15 - October 14, members can lead their own team, join a scheduled trip, support a member, enjoy educational events or participate in a raffle all in a way to support the organization's goal to raise $50,000! Birding for two weeks in Costa Rica, a Leica Spotting Scope and a weekend on the coast are just some of the prizes available this year. More Fall Challenge information... Coyote Creek Field Station On November 26, 2006 the Bird Observatory banded a hatch year Sharp-shinned Hawk at our Coyote Creek field station. This hawk was recaptured at CCFS on December 31, 2006 and again on March 11, 2007. Sadly, we report that this bird was recently found deceased in Summerland, British Columbia. Summerland, BC is approximately 150 miles east of Vancouver, over 1,000 miles north of San Francisco! Snowy Plovers in San Francisco Bay
SITE: Eden Landing Ecological Reserve (Hayward)
Western Snowy Plovers are a threatened shorebird that nest in the dry salt ponds of the South Bay. The Bird Observatory has monitored the Bay's population of Western Snowy Plovers since 2003. Join Bird Observatory biologist Caitlin Robinson and learn plover monitoring techniques including surveillance methods and how to age eggs through floatation. Caitlin will discuss land management techniques and how they can enhance salt pond habitat for the plovers. Learn about other species of plants and animals that share the Snowy Plovers' salt pond habitat. Please RSVP for meeting location and directions. Carpooling required at the reserve. Walks are free to members of the Bird Observatory. A $10 donation is requested for non-members.

Visit the Bird Observatory’s field station and experience conservation science in action. Tour mist nets, watch a bird banding demonstration, and explore a restored riparian habitat. Meet at the Borders bookstore parking lot in McCarthy Ranch, Milpitas. Please include a contact phone number in your RSVP. In the event of rain, the tour is cancelled.

Coyote Creek Field Station Work Day
Site: Coyote Creek Field Station (Milpitas)
If you enjoy spending time outside with other people while observing wildlife, then come help out at a Coyote Creek Field Station Work Day- this is the Observatory's long-term bird banding station. Activities include: clipping vegetation along mist-net paths, shifting orientation of nets, repairing and replacing nets, re-labeling clips, and repairing pallets used as boardwalks. If interested, please let us know your availability and activity preference when you RSVP.

The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory and the Golden Gate Audubon Society
partner on a San Francisco Waterfront Survey
Volunteers from the Bird Observatory and Golden Gate Audubon are partnering to count birds along San Francisco's southeastern waterfront. The Port of San Francisco is planning to demolish dilapidated piers for safety considerations and requested that Golden Gate Audubon survey the areas to determine whether birds were utilizing these structures. Word about the Bird Observatory's Agua Vista tern surveys spread and both groups agreed to work together. Monitoring started in June and runs through August. A conclusive report and recommendations will be presented to the Port this fall. As part of this study, on 6/22/07, the first ever confirmed sighting of Black Skimmers in the City was documented by the surveyors. To participate, please visit www.goldengateaudubon.org.
